Description

These Chocolate Sugar Cookies are rich in cocoa flavor and rolled in sugar, making them perfect for any occasion, especially during the holidays.


Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups (228g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup (85g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (224g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups (310g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup sugar (additional for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside.
  2. Combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Whisk together and set aside.
  3. Cream together the room-temperature butter and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl on medium speed until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Pour in the vanilla extract and mix until well combined.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  7. Bring the dough together with a rubber spatula to form a cohesive ball.
  8. Scoop about 1 1/2 tablespoons of dough and roll into a ball, then roll in the additional sugar to coat.
  9. Arrange the sugar-coated balls on the prepared baking sheet and press down slightly on the tops.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 7-8 minutes.
  11. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 4-5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

For added flavor, consider adding mint extract, nuts, chocolate chips, or spices. Dough can be prepared a day in advance.
