Description

A comforting and hearty beef dish with caramelized onions and melted cheese, perfect for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (divided)
  • 2 1/4 cups beef broth (divided)
  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onions, one tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, and 1/4 cup of beef broth. Stir to coat the onions.
  2. Continue cooking the onions, stirring occasionally for about 6-7 minutes, until they are soft and golden.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, remaining tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, breadcrumbs, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Gently mix the beef mixture until well combined, then form into 5 patties.
  5. Add the patties to the skillet and fry for 4 minutes on each side, then remove them to a plate.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the onions, cooking and stirring for one minute.
  7. Slowly pour in the remaining beef broth, stirring constantly.
  8. Reduce heat to medium-low, return the patties to the pan, and top each with cheese. Cover and simmer for 6-8 minutes until cheese is melted and meat is cooked through.

Notes

Make ahead by preparing patties and onions in advance. Store in the fridge for up to a day before cooking. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
